Smith Rock

I took a day off work to hike around and photograph Smith Rock, a rock climbers paradise in central Oregon, near the small town of Terrebonne, north of Bend and Redmond and south of Madras. Formed approximately 14 million years ago, Smith Rock is the remnant of an extinct volcano that has been surrounded and worn down more recently by the Crooked River. I arrived just before sunup, and spent most of the morning clambering about and looking for photo opportunities.

The views from the summit are spectacular.
