After reaching land again, we drove north on the main road (highway 525/20) until we arrived at the Captain Whidbey Inn, located between Coupeville and Oak Harbor, overlooking Penn Cove. This is the original building where the reception is located, well over a hundred years old, and which we were informed during dinner is quite haunted. Only adults are allowed to stay in this building--our accomodations were in a more modern structure adjacent.

After we settled in, Lara and Ewan went exploring across the extensive grounds, including this bridge over the salt-water inlet to a largish pond.

After a round of pooh sticks and running around the pond, they settled down to a bit of fishing.

The clouds had parted in the past hour as the sun sank, and the air was quite still.

Just before dinner we went for a short walk out onto the dock which juts out into Penn Cove from the main grounds.

Apparently this small yacht is anchored here most of the time, to add a bit of seafaring color for landlubbers like us.
