Whidbey Island

Our college astronomy professor and his wife (who worked with Sally's mother in the elementary school) retired to Whidbey Island some years ago, and the welcome mat has been out for us ever since. So we took a long weekend to see the island and to visit Claude and Betty near Oak Harbor. Here we wait for the car ferry at Mukilteo (not far from Everett) to take us over to Clinton, on the island.

We had about an hour before our turn came to board, so we walked around a bit. Here is the ferry we took as it arrived from Clinton. Whidbey Island is behind the ferry.

Ours was one of the first cars onto the SS Cathlamet, so we got a front-row seat for the crossing, which is only about 20 minutes in duration. There was a strong headwind as we crossed.

A long-time Whidbey resident talked to us during the crossing. He is very proud of his island.
