Illumination Rock and Hogsback
date: 30 Nov 2008 -- updated: 21 March 2009
The day after we returned from Pendleton I awoke around 2am and headed out for Timberline by 4. I wanted to make for Illumination Rock and perhaps the Hogsback, depending on conditions, intending to be relatively high on the mountain by sunrise. I tried my first shot when I was nearly to Silcox Hut.

This was just your run-of-the-mill sunrise, but as usual the colors were intense and photography does them no justice. Of course, if I had a better camera...I wonder if I can talk Sally into that...

Normally I come through here while there is a thick blanket of snow, and I'm always a little surprised by the number of large boulders and deep ravines on this slope that are completely obscured.

The first rays of sunrise hitting the mountain. Again, the camera does it little justice.

Some way above the lift house, I glance back at Trillium, Jefferson, the Sisters.

In a south-easterly direction the valleys are still filled with mist.
