Points South

This morning we reluctantly said goodbye to the Highlands, and headed down the A9 towards Edinburgh. We planned to stop along the way to see some friends whom we have not seen since New York, but they were sick and we were sick so we decided not to exchange germs. That was quite disappointing to Sally and me, as well as to the little people. We headed on in to Edinburgh on the A90 over the Forth road bridge.

As we crossed over Sally tried to get a shot of the Forth Rail Bridge, but it was hard to see from our vantage point. I've been over it, years ago as I made my way to Wick.

Once downtown, we parked at the St. James temple of commerce and other nonsense and walked over to the castle. Along the way I snapped a shot of the national gallery.

While the motto may be true as regards the castle, having withstood numerous sieges, unfortunately it is less true of the Scots generally. I suppose if the motto really held, I wouldn't be an American...

From inside the first curtain wall there is a splendid view of the Firth of Forth, and I was able to elbow my way past the east europeans to get to see it.

We decided not to drop the 55 quid or so that it would have cost to go inside. We were short of time, needing to get to Penrith by nightfall. So instead we dropped the same amount in the gift shop...
