It is a little hard to comprehend that there is rain forest not more than about 50 miles from here. This part of the world is in the Cascade rain shadow, and moderately arid as a result.


The Monkey Face. See it?

The Monkey Face is a four-hundred foot high spire of rock that is home to many climbing lines, some of which can be seen here.

A couple of climbers on the dihedrals.

Looking west toward the Three Sisters, in the Cascade range. Smith Rock is almost entirely surrounded by a later basalt flow from Newberry Crater to the south. Some of the darker basalt is visible just beyond the light-brown tuff.
