This particular tree, an acer palmatum dissectum or lace leaf, is one of my favorites in the garden. Last autumn I attended a tutorial on maple pruning, and we worked on this specimen, the goal of which is to expose its inner structure through the layers of leaves.

Now, with the leaves off, I can investigate its inner structure using only light and depth of field. The remaining images on this page were made on a grey, rainy day.
