Cruban Beag

Today we drove up to Aviemore, with the intent of heading to Cairngorm. Lara was a bit sick, and the weather was not very good (our first real rainy day in Scotland) so we just bummed around Aviemore, drove up on the mountain, but then headed home.

We had also planned to go horse-back riding, but as Lara was not well, we had to cancel that too, and I decided to go on a solo hike through the rain to the top of the Cruban Beag. As I set out I saw some deer.

When I reached their position (they were long gone) I could see back down to the valley where we were staying.

I was continuously fascinated at what one walks over as you climb upon Highland mountains. Grasses give way to heather, lichens, mosses and other sturdy undergrowth as you ascend.

Cruban Beag is composed of several successively higher humps that lead to the main summit. Here I was at the top of one of those humps, next to a cairn, with the summit in sight.

Looking south towards Dalwhinnie. Loch Ericht is through the notch on the right, and the A9 curves towards the Pass of Drumochter over on the left.

The other direction I could see towards Laggan.
