We spent the night in Bend, at the McMenamin's hotel. It was quite nice, but for one thing. There were no mattress pads on the beds, just sheets directly on mattresses, which really grossed Sally out. I hope they get that fixed. We wound up watching a travel show in which (ironically) the presenter explored several South American volcanoes.
Next morning, after breakfast in the hotel, we headed out to Newberry Crater, an enormous caldera (larger than the caldera that forms Crater Lake), that houses two lakes, a cinder cone between them, nearly the world's largest obsidian flow as well as an 8,000 foot peak. First, we clambered up the obsidian flow, erupted about 1400 years ago.

Paulina Peak, our next destination, looms in the background.
